Lambda
Foundation:
establishes Canada’s only national series of annual university scholarships
in gay and lesbian studies. We produce popular Wilde About Sappho, Canada’s
annual celebration of gay and lesbian literature, where audiences hear
and meet outstanding authors.
Mission:
Lambda Foundation advances public education in Equality Rights by establishing
university scholarships in gay and lesbian studies and by publicly showcasing
the achievements of Lambda Foundation scholars.
Mandate:
Lambda Foundation is a Canadian federally-incorporated Charitable Organization
dedicated to advancing education in Equality Rights. Lambda Foundation
recognizes, honours, and rewards the work of people of high merit as worthy
and instructive examples. Through its public programs Lambda Foundation
features and welcomes individuals or groups building bridges of understanding
of gays and lesbians with other equality-seeking groups and with Canadian
Society at large.
Aim:
To establish Lambda Scholarships at all universities where sufficient
numbers of donors and supporters exist.
Lambda Foundation
national scholarship series in gay and lesbian studies is unique in Canada.
Individuals commemorate their loved ones and their own values through
sums they leave to Lambda Foundation in their wills, by individual donations,
and by purchasing tickets to Lambda Foundation events. Accomplishments
of Lambda Foundation scholars are showcased during Lambda Foundation public
events, including Wilde About Sappho.
Lambda Foundation
negotiates the terms of each scholarship at each university, on behalf
of donors. Lambda Foundation publicizes the availability of the awards,
and their purposes, and maintains close contact with the universities.
Biographical information on donors is welcome and is archived so that
it can be recalled over the long life of the scholarship commemorative
activity. Lambda Foundation will service and manage existing scholarships,
whose purposes are consistent with our mandate.
Lambda Foundation's
long-running "Wilde About Sappho" annual celebration of gay
and lesbian literature is one of Canada's major literary events. Authors
are chosen by committees searching for writing excellence, creativity
and originality, diversity, regional representation, and gender balance.
Advice and input to the committees are welcome.
History:
Lambda Foundation was first incorporated in 1992 following years of local
initiatives, including local literary readings, auctions, and other undertakings
by Lambda business and professional volunteers, particularly in Ottawa.
In January, 2003, Lambda Foundation became a registered Public Foundation.
Donors contribute from everywhere. Sponsorships from arts organizations
and positively-inclined community based businesses are welcome. Gifts
in kind are also welcome and have been very helpful. To advance its mandate,
Lambda Foundation maintains open, informative, non-partisan relationships
with leaders at all levels of government. We are proud of our Honorary
Patrons, who include several respected Canadian politicians of all stripes.
We welcome volunteers, including tele-volunteers who may wish to contribute
from home.
Current members
of the Lambda Foundation Board and Executive are located in Montreal and
Ottawa. No staff is employed and administrative costs are very low.
