Meet Another Carleton U Scholarship Recipient 2010 |

 Grant Burke spent most of his 20’s listening to music and riding, racing, working on and selling bicycles. About five years ago, sensing an impasse with his work and life, and with the encouragement of his husband, he went back to school. After starting at the University of Ottawa, Grant transferred to the University of Maryland College Park, where he received a B.A with honors in History. While there he was lucky enough to attend classes in urban history taught by David M.P. Freund, author of Colored Property : State Policy and White Racial Politics in Suburban America, and became hooked on urban history. Subsequently, his master’s thesis, which he is currently in his second year of, is attempting to construct a social history of Ottawa’s Queer community, with a particular emphasis on the spaces and places that the community has used over time; how these spaces reflected on the values of the community; its relationship with Ottawa and society writ large; and how both have changed over time.

Gulf Islands 2010 Award Recipient Celebrated |

|
 Madison Fetherston (left) was one of three Gulf Islands Secondary School students to receive the Lambda Foundation, Jack Hallam Human Rights Award. Bill Turner (center), Lambda board member and Vice-President together with Jack Hallam (right) presented Madison with the award during a celebratory lunch.
Mr. Hallam founded the Gulf Islands Secondary School human rights awards in 2007 to address issues of racism and homophobia. Mr. Hallam's continued efforts and support serve as an inspiration not only on Salts Spring Island and in British Columbia but also across the country where interest in other similar initiatives is emerging.

 Ghaida Moussa complète actuellement une Maîtrise interdisciplinaire en Mondialisation et développement international et en Études des femmes à l’Université d’Ottawa. Sa thèse, intitulée « Narrative (Sub)Versions: How Queer Palestinian Womyn “Queer” Palestinian Identity », analyse les diverses formes de résistances traditionnelles, journalières et créatives qu’adoptent les femmes palestiniennes queer qui mettent au défi certains narratifs coloniaux, néocoloniaux et nationaux qui sont oppressifs par le fait qu’ils créent des dichotomies fictives, « représentent » faussement les réalités des Palestiniens queer et se fondent sur l’institution d’idéaux inatteignables. La thèse défie l’idée selon laquelle les luttes nationales occupent une place prioritaire face aux autres luttes, |

Lambda Celebrates Community with Literary Event |

 Local writers - Blaine Marchand, Sean Zio, Luna Allison, Gabriella Goliger - attracted an audience of 100 to the event in the foyer of City Hall in celebration of community and Lambda at 25. Michael Bhardwaj (far right) of CBC's In Town and Out hosted the entertaining and inspiring event.
Organizing the Queer Generations event was a strong team effort by Lambda board members. Gary Sealey (upper left) and long-serving president is shown cutting the cake (lower right). Barbara Freeman of Carleton University, took the lead role for the board, supported by other board members including Pat McKenna (Secretary/Information Services, Victoria) and Stephen Brown (lower left), University of Ottawa and Tuan Vu (Treasurer, Montreal), shown on the right beside Stephen. The enthusiastic audience and generous donors took this special anniversary event as an opportunity to contribute to scholarships, awards, and bursaries at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, in particular, and to universities and schools across the country, generally.  Emerich Daroya completed undergraduate studies in Political Science and Sociology at York University and is currently working on an MA in Sociology at Carleton University. Emerich's main areas of interest are on sexuality studies, queer theory, critical race theory, and intersectionality. And his research is aimed at addressing the gaps in literature on the sociology of desire, which is largely absent from sexuality studies. He wishes to expand the idea of desire to racialized desire, specifically in the context of the LGBT community. Emerich wants to focus on gay Asian men as a case-study of the intersections of race, gender-expression, class, and sexuality with desires and desirability. |
