Dr. Barbara Freeman
Barbara M. Freeman taught for close to 30 years in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University in Ottawa. She is now an adjunct research professor, concentrating on media history, and gender and diversity in the news media, specifically a history of women in Canadian journalism, 1945-2000. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism degree and a Master of Arts in Canadian Studies, both from Carleton, and a Ph.D. in history from Concordia University in Montreal. She is the author of three media history books: Beyond Bylines: Media Workers and Women's Rights in Canada (2011); The Satellite Sex: The Media and Women’s Issues in English Canada, 1966-71 (2001) and Kit’s Kingdom: The Journalism of Kathleen Blake Coleman (1989). She has also written a number of articles and conference papers on lesbians and the media and is slowly building an oral history collection on that topic. She volunteers for a number of LGBTI and women's organizations, Lambda being her main focus these days. She lives in Ottawa most of the year and in Victoria, BC during the winter.
Bill Turner
Born in Vancouver in 1945, Bill graduated from Britannia High School and went on to UBC where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) in 1969, the year he married Barbara. In 1971, he returned to UBC for a year in Business Education, in which he found his calling. His first teaching position was in Mackenzie, BC, followed by a stint in Saanich, and finally settling in North Vancouver, where he taught high school business courses for 25 years. Helping educate and guide young people has been incredibly satisfying to Bill. He is especially proud of a work experience programme he developed for at-risk teenagers which resulted in countless students not only finding a suitable career, but most importantly, gaining the self-esteem which is so often missing in such young people and which is so important to success in all areas of life.
After Bill's marriage dissolved in 1986, he met Edward Poole. Bill and Edward shared a rich life together until Ed's recent passing, including close relationships with their four children and nine grandchildren. Bill still lives on bucolic Salt Spring Island and operates 'Birdsong', a successful bed and breakfast. He has served as a very busy substitute teacher at Gulf Islands Secondary School, education and mentoring the fine young people of today. In addition, Bill enjoys listening to opera, renovating the house, gardening, traveling and socializing with family and friends.
Bill is also very active in the gay community. He is a past president, and current secretary, of GLOSSI (Gays and Lesbians of Salt Spring Island) as well as sponsor of the Gay Straight Alliance of GISS (the aforementioned high school).
Tuan Vu
Tuan Vu is an associate actuary and a consultant in information system implementation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Master’s in Mathematics from the University of New Brunswick; and a MBA from McGill University. He has worked in diverse industries including banking, insurance, hydroelectric utility, manufacturing, high tech, and public sector organizations.

Dr. Brian Ray
Brian Ray is an associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Ottawa and has an active research program that revolves around cities and city people. Brian has conducted several studies about the LGBTQ community and the contestation of urban space, but most of his research focuses on issues of immigrant integration, discrimination and racism, and housing. Brian is active in a number of LGBTQ organizations and since 1993 has run with Frontrunner groups in Montreal, Washington, and Ottawa. Pursuing physical fitness with men and women from the community is one of his passions.
